TASTING NOTES

Forty percent Monastrell, 30% Tempranillo, 20% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Elaborated separately then blended and aged four months in French oak, these four varieties come together to shape a well structured, concentrated, and intensely aromatic blend. A velvety and round palate is highlighted by red fruit and mineral notes with a long finish.

PRESS

Carchelo "C" (2014) - "Spicy, toasty black-fruit aromas set up a firm palate with tannic grip. Spicy flavors of dark plum and blackberry are typical of this type of Monastrell blend. Peppery notes and herbal accents are up front on the finish."

Carchelo "C" (2013) - "Inky ruby. Smoky cherry, blackberry and vanilla on the nose, with a hint of cracked pepper in the background. Smooth and open-knit, offering broad dark fruit flavors and a good wallop of oak spices. The peppery quality comes back on the finish, adding a palate-numbing nuance and sharpening the wine's plush black and blue fruit character. I wonder if a little bottle age will tame the oak here."

Carchelo "C" (2011) - "Immediately this presents itself in a positive light. The color is bright and lucid, the nose is solid and smells clean and lush, and the body is full, stout and smacks firmly with priper tannin-acid balance. Flavors of peppery, chocolaty black fruits finish toastym peppery and thorough."

Carchelo "C" (2011) - "(A blend of 40% Monastrell, 40% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon): Bright purple. Spice- and mineral-accented aromas of dried cherry and cassis, with a smoky nuance gaining strength with air. Taut and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and dark berry flavors and a hint of cracked pepper. The energetic finish shows good clarity and youthful tannic grip. "

Carchelo "C" (2011) - "This solid red features a thick, polished texture carrying flavors of plum, chocolate, loam and toast. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, with enough acidity to keep the austere finish fresh. Drink now through 2018. 30,000 cases made."

Carchelo "C" (2011) - "This cuvee of monastrell (mourvedre), tempranillo and cabernet sauvignon is a delicious blend of traditional Spanish grape varieties with the international cabernet to produce something modern and delicious."

Carchelo "C" (2010) - "Focused and fresh, this has aromas of berry and integrated citrus. It feels rubbery and lush, with acidic cut and roasted flavors of plum, blackberry and leather. It finishes mildly roasted and earthy, with a leathery lasting impression."

Carchelo "C" (2010) - "Bright purple. Smoky aromas of cherry-vanilla and cassis, with a spicy quality that gains strength with air. Juicy and broad on entry, then firmer in the mid-palate, offering sweet black and blue fruit flavors lifted by tangy acidity. Still quite primary and in need of some bottle age. Finishes sappy, spicy and nicely persistent."

Carchelo "C" (2009) - "This starts with a smooth impression of ripe fig before fresher red fruit scents reveal the wine's tension. If you open it now, you'll need lamb to tame its rustic young tannins. But the sweet fruit and crunchy acidity will sustain it as those tannins mature in the cellar-probably at its best in four or five years."

Carchelo "C" (2009) - "Bright violet. Cherry, licorice and dark chocolate on the nose. Nicely focused bitter cherry and mint flavors pick up smoky and peppery qualities in the middle palate. Finishes with good cut and a lingering note of cherry pit. "

Carchelo "C" (2009) - "The 2009 Carchelo is a blend of 50% Monastrell, 30% Tempranillo, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 3 months in new French oak. Opaque purple-colored with a nose of toasty blue fruits, on the palate it has good density, plenty of mid-palate blue and black fruit, and a fruit-filled finish. Drink this excellent value over the next 3-4 years."

Carchelo "C" (2007) - "The 2007 Carchelo has a medium ruby hue and aromas of fresh red berries and plum. Sourced from old low-yielding Monastrell vines, and blended with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, it exhibits fresh and fruity dark cherry and plum flavors on the palate. It also has ripe tannins, good acidity and a long fruity finish."

BODEGAS CARCHELO WINERY INFO

Overview: Bodegas Carchelo dates from the early 1980s and pioneering efforts to modernize viticulture in what had been a backwater viticultural region. 250 acres of prime vineyards are widely distributed in the region, at widely varying altitudes and exposures. Varieties grown feature Monastrell (in France Mourvèdre, both ungrafted head-pruned and wire-trained vineyards) plus Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

History: Bodegas Carchelo was founded in the early 1980s in one of the earliest efforts to bring Jumilla into the age of modern wine. In addition to the indigenous Monastrell (Mourvèdre) variety, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are grown to enhance structure. Achieving a fresh and balanced style, by the early 1990s Carchelo's rich young red had put Jumilla on the road to international respectability.

Located at altitudes between 2000 and 3500 feet in the transition between Spain's coastal plain and inland La Mancha, Jumilla's aridity combines to result in fresh nighttime temperatures during the hot growing season. Chalky and clay soils offer ideal footing for the red varieties. At under eight inches of rain per year, grape health is seldom a problem. 700 acres of estate vineyards are planted to Monastrell (Mourvèdre, both ungrafted head-pruned and wire trained vineyards), Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet and Merlot, and are located in a wide variety of subregions, altitudes and exposures, reducing the risk of frequent hail damage in the area.

Estate vineyards are located in five distinct Jumilla subregions with varying exposures and soil profiles, assuring a healthy diversity of fruit and vintage consistency.
