Viña Magna (2015) - "This pitch black colored Tempranillo opens with a fragrant ripe blackberry and oak bouquet with hints of black licorice. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, well-balanced and smooth. The flavor profile is a mineral influenced blackberry with notes of oak and clove. I also detected a hint of black cherry towards the end. The finish is rather dry and its moderate tannins are well-managed and show very nice length. This Tempranillo would pair very nicely with Roy's rib roast. Enjoy."

Viña Magna (2014) - "Toasty oak and graphite aromas fortify a nose that's lemony on the surface and ripe and fruity at the base. A creamy, resiny mouthfeel is toughened by hard tannins, while this wine tastes of toasty oak and black fruits. A dark, woody finish is chocolaty and rich. Drink through 2027. "

Viña Magna (2011) - "Ultraripe aromas of blackberry, cassis, raisin, tobacco and vanilla lead to a plush flush palate with kick-ass tannins. This tastes of baked blackberry, cassis and chocolate, while the finish is stout and dense as a brick. If you like full-bodied, ripe and saturated reds, this was made for you. Drink through 2025."

Viña Magna (2011) - "This pitch black colored Tempranillo is a bold and concentrated wine. It opens with a fragrant blueberry, black cherry and dark chocolate bouquet. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, juicy and rich. The flavor profile is fig and rum cake blend with notes plum. I also detected hints of black pepper, espresso and oak. The finish is dry and its flavors and medium tannins linger and last for a while. I would drink this wine on its own on a chilly night by the fireplace. Enjoy – Ken"

Overview: In the late 1990s Burgos native José María Basconcillos sought virgin land in at high elevation to provide the perfect conditions for organic viticulture. He found it in 125 acres at the northernmost extreme of the region, at an altitude of over 3300 feet. Using cuttings from ungrafted vines, native Tinta del País (Tempranillo) clones were obtained for in-field grafting in 2001. The undulating and sloping terrain offers varied soil types (chalk, sand, clay, loam) and diversity of terroir within the contiguous property.

History: The state of the art bodega, located among the vines château-style, is efficiently designed to obtain maximum quality. Grapes are harvested and delivered in 16kg crates, de-stemmed, and thrice-selected before entering the gravity flow process as whole berries. Bordeaux-trained native enologist Francisco Barona seeks concentration with maximum freshness and balance, taking advantage of the high elevation, low-pH fruit to conduct patient and natural winemaking. The wines undergo malolactic and are aged in a mixture of French and American oak, one-third new, for the time required according to wine and vintage.

Estate comprises 125 contiguous acres at the highest and most northern extreme of Ribera del Duero, over 3300 feet in elevation.

Location of the earliest monastic vineyards in the area, Dominio Basconcillos represents a return to the high slopes. 100% organic viticulture, indigenous-clone Tempranillo field-grafted in 2001. Wines are aged in a mixture of French and American oak, one-third new.
