Dominio Basconcillos 12 Meses (2011) - "This is a concentrated bruiser from a ripe warm vintage. Aromas of cheesy oak, vanilla, maple and blackberry require as much air as possible. Saturated, heavy and jammy on the palate, this pounds the palate with rugged tannins. Flavors of blackberry, prune and chocolate finish thick, chewy and grabby. This is not about elegance—it’s all about power and concentration. Drink through 2025."

Dominio Basconcillos 12 Meses (2011) - "Black cherry, plum, loamy earth and graphite flavors are accented by tarragon and smoky notes. Muscular tannins and balsamic acidity impart a sturdy structure."

Overview: In the late 1990s Burgos native José María Basconcillos sought virgin land in at high elevation to provide the perfect conditions for organic viticulture. He found it in 125 acres at the northernmost extreme of the region, at an altitude of over 3300 feet. Using cuttings from ungrafted vines, native Tinta del País (Tempranillo) clones were obtained for in-field grafting in 2001. The undulating and sloping terrain offers varied soil types (chalk, sand, clay, loam) and diversity of terroir within the contiguous property.

History: The state of the art bodega, located among the vines château-style, is efficiently designed to obtain maximum quality. Grapes are harvested and delivered in 16kg crates, de-stemmed, and thrice-selected before entering the gravity flow process as whole berries. Bordeaux-trained native enologist Francisco Barona seeks concentration with maximum freshness and balance, taking advantage of the high elevation, low-pH fruit to conduct patient and natural winemaking. The wines undergo malolactic and are aged in a mixture of French and American oak, one-third new, for the time required according to wine and vintage.

Estate comprises 125 contiguous acres at the highest and most northern extreme of Ribera del Duero, over 3300 feet in elevation.

Location of the earliest monastic vineyards in the area, Dominio Basconcillos represents a return to the high slopes. 100% organic viticulture, indigenous-clone Tempranillo field-grafted in 2001. Wines are aged in a mixture of French and American oak, one-third new.
