TASTING NOTES

Strong fruit and flower aromas reminiscent of wild berries and violets, typical of Syrah varietals, with spicy and toasted notes. In the mouth the wine is big, refreshing, and silky with good ageing potential, easily reaching over seven years but already attaining its full flavor.

PRESS

Altico "A" (2014) - "This generous red delivers plum and blackberry flavors backed by licorice, black pepper and tar notes. Gentle tannins and acidity give this just enough structure for balance."

Altico "A" (2009) - "Bodegas Carchelo's 2009 Altico A is a cuvee of 100% Syrah, 33% of which went through malolactic fermentation in barrel followed by 6 months of aging. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it reveals an enticing nose of smoked meat, game, and blueberry. Grapy, ripe, and youthful in the mouth, this round, friendly, easygoing effort is an outstanding value meant for drinking over the next 5 years. "

Altico "A" (2008) - "The 2008 Altico A is a blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Tempranillo aged for four months in new French oak. It delivers a nose of damp earth, pencil lead, mocha, black cherry, and blueberry leading to a structured offering with good grip and balance. This intensely flavored, chunky offering is a very good value that will provide pleasure through 2015."

Altico "A" (2008) - "This modern red is sleek and fresh, featuring sweet cherry and vanilla flavors and light tannins. Notes of licorice and smoke add interest to the finish. Syrah. Drink now. 2,000 cases made."

Altico "A" (2008) - "Inky ruby. Textbook syrah aromas of dark berries, violet, smoke and cracked pepper, with a hint of warmth. Juicy, palate-coating blackberry and blueberry flavors are lifted by gentle acidity and pick up a touch of singed cherry with air. The peppery note repeats on the finish, which shows a faint hard edge. "

Altico "A" (2008) - "This slightly opaque and very dark purple colored wine opens with a very fragrant red currant and red raspberry bouquet with a hint of cinnamon. On the palate, this wine is medium to full bodied, shows some elevated acidity, yet remains round and smooth in the mouth. The flavor profile is a gentle black currant with notes of blackberry and oak. There is also a touch of black licorice mixed in. The finish is dry with moderate tannins. Its old oak flavors continue to linger in the aftertaste."

Altico "A" (2007) - "Bright violet. Cherry and dark berry liqueur aromas are complemented by notes of cracked pepper, violet and black tea. Rich, velvety and smooth, with deep, gently sweet blackberry and mulberry flavors and fine-grained tannins. Very suave wine with an expansive, sappy finish that strongly repeats the blackberry and pepper notes. I'd love to see this alongside some $40 New World syrahs."

Altico "A" (2006) - "Opaque purple. Primary blackberry and blueberry aromas are youthfully unevolved, opening slowly to display subtle graphite and baking spice qualities. Midweight black and blue fruit flavors are strikingly pure, with fine-grained tannins lending support. The sweet fruit lingers impressively on the long, sappy finish, which becomes spicier with air. This is delicious."

Altico "A" (2006) - "The 2006 Altico ‘A’ is 100% Syrah aged four months in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up aromas of smoke, game, lavender, and blueberry. Intense, flavorful, and well-balanced, this pleasure-bent effort will drink well for another four years."

Altico "A" (2006) - "This very dark ruby colored Syrah from Spain, opens with a blueberry bouquet with a hint of peach. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, round, with menthol infused black cherry flavors and some notes of pepper. The finish is quite dry and has a lingering aftertaste. The panel felt this wine would pair nicely with glazed pork chops or curried chicken salad."

BODEGAS CARCHELO WINERY INFO

Overview: Bodegas Carchelo dates from the early 1980s and pioneering efforts to modernize viticulture in what had been a backwater viticultural region. 250 acres of prime vineyards are widely distributed in the region, at widely varying altitudes and exposures. Varieties grown feature Monastrell (in France Mourvèdre, both ungrafted head-pruned and wire-trained vineyards) plus Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

History: Bodegas Carchelo was founded in the early 1980s in one of the earliest efforts to bring Jumilla into the age of modern wine. In addition to the indigenous Monastrell (Mourvèdre) variety, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are grown to enhance structure. Achieving a fresh and balanced style, by the early 1990s Carchelo's rich young red had put Jumilla on the road to international respectability.

Located at altitudes between 2000 and 3500 feet in the transition between Spain's coastal plain and inland La Mancha, Jumilla's aridity combines to result in fresh nighttime temperatures during the hot growing season. Chalky and clay soils offer ideal footing for the red varieties. At under eight inches of rain per year, grape health is seldom a problem. 700 acres of estate vineyards are planted to Monastrell (Mourvèdre, both ungrafted head-pruned and wire trained vineyards), Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet and Merlot, and are located in a wide variety of subregions, altitudes and exposures, reducing the risk of frequent hail damage in the area.

Estate vineyards are located in five distinct Jumilla subregions with varying exposures and soil profiles, assuring a healthy diversity of fruit and vintage consistency.
