One hundred percent Mencía, partially aged in new French oak. Bright red berry fruit and slate on the nose is followed by lingering fruit and minerality, the oak serving to provide structure while remaining well in the background.

Peza do Rei Mencía (2017) - "This dark red colored Mencia opens with a bit of a barnyard, matchstick and red raspberry bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced and a little savory. The flavor profile is black plum with notes of gentle minerality and cherry. I also detected hints of smoky oak on the tail end. The finish is dry and its mild tannins and fruit fade away nicely. I would pair it with Tyler Florence's ultimate Cuban sandwich. Enjoy."

Peza do Rei Mencía (2015) - "This very very dark ruby colored Mencia from Spain is a very good value. It opens with fragrant plum bouquet with hints of pipe tobacco and oak. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced, very approachable and friendly. The flavor profile is a mild red plum with notes of old oak and minerality, I also detected hints of gentle pomegranate, ginger and black olive in the background. The finish is dry and its flavors and moderate tannins linger nicely. This wine would pair perfectly with a slow cooked Texas beef brisket. Enjoy."

Taut, focused and refreshingly bitter, offering cherry pit and licorice flavors that deepen on the back half. Shows very good energy and lift on the incisive, spicy finish."

Peza do Rei Mencía (2012) - "The Enriques family farms eight acres in the Ribera Sacra, in an amphitheater of black slate facing the Río Edo, a tributary of the Sil. The steep terraces provide the fruit for Peza do Rei, a deliciously youthful mencía with cheerful flavors of raspberries and strawberries emanating from the glass. Its juicy acidity gives the wine a feeling of spring. I found it impossible not to adore this wine from the first sip."

On the palate, this wine is light to medium bodied, well balanced and easy to drink. The flavor profile is a mild oak infused red raspberry with hints of black currant and blueberry. The finish is dry and its mild tannins and flavors linger nicely. This is a very nice Mencía. If you have not tried this grape, this wine is a nice one to introduce you to the grape. Pair it with a pulled pork sandwich made with a root beer barbecue sauce. Enjoy."

ADEGA CACHíN / PEZA DO REI WINERY INFO

Overview: The César Enriquez family is among the core group of founding growers of what was to become D.O. Ribeira Sacra, reconstituting their vineyard site to noble varieties from the early 1990s. Peza do Rei is a medieval walled vineyard and woodlands estate taking its name from the Kings of León, for whom it served as an income source and private hunting retreat. Within the extant albeit crumbling medieval walls are twelve acres of vertiginous, single-row slate terraces forming a perfect south-facing amphitheater on the Edo River tributary of the Sil. Varieties planted are Mencía for reds, Godello, Treixadura and Albariño for whites.

History: Ribeira Sacra and its Sil River Canyon must be counted among the world's most spectacular wine regions. Upon visiting, there is no choice but to be convinced of the region's potential to produce supremely expressive and individualistic wines. Twelve acres of vertiginous, single-row slate terraces form a perfect south-facing amphitheater on the Edo River tributary of the Sil. Varieties planted are Mencía for reds, Godello, Treixadura and Albariño for whites. The modern bodega, with a capacity for 50,000 bottles, is excavated into a hillside for complete temperature insulation, and boasts thoroughly updated winemaking equipment.
