Carchelo Selecto "S" (2013) - "Cedar, tobacco and forest floor notes give this firm red an earthy character, but there's a core of berry and spice detail and juicy acidity that keeps this lively through the finish. Expressive, in a savory style. Monastrell, Tempranillo, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. "

Carchelo Selecto "S" (2013) - "Deep ruby. Aromas of ripe dark berries, cola and candied flowers, with a subtle pipe tobacco quality coming up as the wine stretches out. Plush and open-knit, offering weighty blackberry and cherry-vanilla flavors that become livelier and spicier on the back half. Supple tannins add shape to the finish, which lingers with strong, dark fruit-dominated tenacity."

Carchelo Selecto "S" (2013) - "This midnight purple colored wine from Spain is very good. It is also very Old World styled. It opens with prune, blackberry and licorice bouquet. On the palate, this wine is full bodied, balanced, juicy, yet has a round mouthfeel. The flavor profile is similar to the nose. It features, prune, olive, blackberry and oak. I also detected hints of black cherry, nutmeg and cinnamon. It is pretty complex. The finish is dry and its moderate tannins build up and stick around for quite a while. This wine would pair well with a Languedoc beef stew with red wine, herbs and olives."

Overview: Bodegas Carchelo dates from the early 1980s and pioneering efforts to modernize viticulture in what had been a backwater viticultural region. 250 acres of prime vineyards are widely distributed in the region, at widely varying altitudes and exposures. Varieties grown feature Monastrell (in France Mourvèdre, both ungrafted head-pruned and wire-trained vineyards) plus Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

History: Bodegas Carchelo was founded in the early 1980s in one of the earliest efforts to bring Jumilla into the age of modern wine. In addition to the indigenous Monastrell (Mourvèdre) variety, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are grown to enhance structure. Achieving a fresh and balanced style, by the early 1990s Carchelo's rich young red had put Jumilla on the road to international respectability. Located at altitudes between 2000 and 3500 feet in the transition between Spain's coastal plain and inland La Mancha, Jumilla's aridity combines to result in fresh nighttime temperatures during the hot growing season. Chalky and clay soils offer ideal footing for the red varieties. At under eight inches of rain per year, grape health is seldom a problem. 700 acres of estate vineyards are planted to Monastrell (Mourvèdre, both ungrafted head-pruned and wire trained vineyards), Syrah, Tempranillo, Cabernet and Merlot, and are located in a wide variety of subregions, altitudes and exposures, reducing the risk of frequent hail damage in the area. Estate vineyards are located in five distinct Jumilla subregions with varying exposures and soil profiles, assuring a healthy diversity of fruit and vintage consistency.
