OVERVIEW

The Morell family vineyard estate is comprised of nine parcels totaling seventeen acres in the outskirts of Tarragona on the Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Defying urban sprawl, the vineyards lie within a mile and half of the sea, their soils composed of calcareous loam derived from shell (fossil) limestone, known locally as lumaquela.

The heat-mitigating sea breezes and the singularly mineral soils motivated the Morells to perennially dedicate their parcels to vineyard, with the objective of producing wines at the highest and most expressive level. With the encouragement of experts and in recognition of the estate’s unique viticultural gifts, TERRER (terroir) was the clear choice of name.

Red varieties grown are Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha, vines between 15 and 25 years of age. Viticulture is sustainable and yields are held to a scant 1.5 tons per acre. Careful berry selection is followed by natural fermentation and aging during approximately one year in seasoned barriques and 5,000-liter uprights of French oak, seeking minimal wood influence. 2010 represents a début of sorts, the first vintage produced in a new bodega facility in the heart of the estate.

PRESS

Terrer d'Aubert (2012) - "Black cherry, blackberry, licorice, graphite and toasty flavors mingle in this polished, harmonious red, with a good balance of well-integrated tannins and acidity. The long finish shows floral and mineral notes. Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2020."

Terrer d'Aubert (2012) - "Vivid purple. Potent black and blue fruit scents are lifted and sharpened by suggestions of allspice and cracked pepper. Juicy, linear and focused, revealing bitter cherry and cassis flavors that deepen and spread out. Concentrated yet lithe, finishes with excellent clarity, strong persistence and gentle, late-arriving tannins."

Terrer d'Aubert (2012) - "I never think of a Cabernet Sauvignon when I smell this wine. The 2012 Terrer d'Aubert is definitively more influenced by the soil and climate than the grape variety. Once you know it, it's easy to guess where the classic black pepper and balsamic aromas come from. The classical palate is serious, medium to full-bodied with austere tannins and a chalky, tasty finish. 15,000 bottles produced."

Terrer d'Aubert (2011) - "Inky ruby. Ripe cherry, pipe tobacco, violet and woodsmoke on the deeply perfumed nose. Plush and open-knit, offering smooth blackberry and cherry compote flavors sharpened by a peppery nuance. Closes spicy and tight, with sneaky sweetness and even tannins."

Nus del Terrer (2011) - "Deep ruby. Pungent cherry compote and cassis scents are complicated by pipe tobacco, lavender and woodsmoke. Fleshy and seamless on the palate, offering ripe dark fruit flavors enlivened by a peppery nuance and a touch of floral pastilles. Dusty tannins give shape and grip to the long, smoky finish, which leaves a bitter cherry note behind."

Nus del Terrer (2010) - "This blend of Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon is a dense, ripe bruiser with huge blackberry aromas that set up a wide-bodied, raw-feeling palate with tons of extract and monster tannins. Blackberry, espresso, chocolate and spice flavors are full, ripe and deep. Things hold firm on a staunch, youthful finish. Drink through 2021."

Terrer d'Aubert (2010) - "This midnight blue colored Cabernet Sauvignon from Spain opens with a musty old oak, new leather and cassis liquor like bouquet. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, slightly acidic and juicy. The flavor profile is a mineral and cedar plank infused black cherry with notes of black pepper, blackberry and anise. The finish is quite dry and its flavors and moderate tannins stick around for quite some time. This Spanish Cab would pair well with a thick and well-marbled ribeye steak. Enjoy."

Nus del Terrer (2010) - "The pitch black Spanish red blend opens with a mild black licorice and blackberry bouquet. On the palate, the wine is full bodied, balanced, and dense. The flavor profile is black currant with notes of black licorice, dark chocolate, and black cherry. I also detected a hint of oak as well. The finish is dry and dusty tannins linger for quite a while. This big wine will pair well with a juicy cowboy ribeye steak. Enjoy."

Nus del Terrer (2010) - "(60% Garnacha and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon): Opaque ruby. Complex, highly perfumed bouquet of dark berry preserves, smoky minerals and incense, with a hint of pipe tobacco in the background. Juicy, penetrating and appealingly sweet, offering energetic blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors lifted by tangy acidity. A suave mocha quality comes up on the clinging finish, which leaves zesty mineral and cracked pepper notes behind."

Terrer d'Aubert (2010) - "(Made from old Cabernet Sauvignon vines and aged in used French oak): Deep ruby. Pungent cherry and dark berry scents, plus notes of cured tobacco and dried flowers. Chewy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors give way with air to brighter red fruits, with juicy acidity providing lift and cut. Closes with tooth-dusting tannins and very good, fruity persistence. An interesting take on cabernet, with the requisite structure and balance to age. The importer says there's some Garnacha in here but the label doesn't disclose it."
