ADEGA EIDOS

Region: Galicia
Appellation: D.O. Rías Baixas
City: Padriñán-Sanxenxo
Winery Website: www.adegaeidos.com
Winery GPS Coordinates: 42° 24.446', -8°48.348

OVERVIEW

Founded in 2000, a modern green facility completed in 2003. Located in Padriñán parish overlooking Sanxenxo harbor on the southern edge of the Val do Salnés subdistrict at the westernmost, maritime extreme of Rías Baixas. Twenty acres of old and often ungrafted Albariño vines among 100 separate parcels located amongst the gardens of Sanxenxo enjoy a southerly exposure protected from the north winds. ‘Eidos’ are the backyard garden arbors constituting the traditional Albariño vineyard. Selected grapes from vines over 50 years are destemmed, crushed and macerated under temperature control for maximum aromatic extraction. Natural yeasts are encouraged for a prolonged fermentation, the wine bottled beginning in April following the vintage after extended contact with the fine lees. Richly textured and exotically intense Albariños are the result, the salty sea breeze and granitic soils evident in a mouthwateringly mineral finish.

HISTORY

Founded in 2000 by local growers, Adega Eidos produces Albariño from grapes grown exclusively in and among the gardens of Sanxenxo in the parish of Padriñán, at the southern extreme of Rías Baixas’ Val do Salnés subdistrict.

Padriñán comprises a singular south-facing slope overlooking the sea, its ideal exposure enhanced by reflection from the water and a wind-sheltering stand of eucalyptus at the top of the slope. The ‘Eidos’ (garden arbors) in Sanxenxo are traditionally trained, more often than not ungrafted and over 50 years of age. 100 such parcels totaling 20 acres are owned or controlled by Adega Eidos.

Since 2003, winemaking has taken place in a winemaking facility of efficient and modern design overlooking Sanxenxo harbor. Selected bunches are brought the short distance in small crates, then subjected to further sorting before destemming, crushing and cold maceration. Natural yeasts are encouraged under temperature control to achieve long fermentations and natural clarification, the wines left on their fine lees until bottling. The primary wine, Eidos de Padriñán, offers ripe and extracted Albariño fruit with clear salty/mineral notes from the sea breeze and granitic soil.

An isolated fermentation facility within the winery is used for micro-vinification of the oldest ungrafted parcels, subsequently aged three years on its lees to become ContraAParede—a paragon of the category.

Total annual production averages between 3000 and 4000 cases.

Contraaparede (2014) - "The deep golden color and nutty accents show advanced age, but this white has developed well, featuring a core of pear and beeswax flavors, framed by floral, spice and vanilla notes. Firm acidity keeps this focused. Harmonious."

Eidos de Padriñán Albariño (2017) - "Pale yellow. Intense citrus and orchard fruit scents are complemented by suggestions of honeysuckle and pungent herbs. Juicy and seamless on the palate, offering pear nectar and white peach flavors that firm up slowly on the back half. Becomes spicier with air and finishes with good clarity and length, leaving mineral and floral notes behind."

Contraaparede (2012) - "Sold five years after the harvest, the 2012 Contra a Parede is a selection of Adega Eidos' oldest vines from the Salnés Valley, matured for four years in vats in contact with the fine lees. Given its age it shows very well, with a complex nose with aromas of quince and yeasts and more nuances developing as the wine sits in the glass. The palate reveals a serious wine with some restraint, good balance and integrated acidity. This has developed very nicely, offering complexity, elegance and power."

Eidos de Padriñán Albariño (2017) - "This straw colored Albarino from Rias Baixas is very good. It opens with a wet stone and light tangerine bouquet. On the palate, this wine is light to medium bodied, slightly acidic and round. The flavor profile is a tasty mineral infused lime with notes of grapefruit and hints of lime and nectarine. The finish is dry and its flavors linger and last for quite a while. I would pair this Albarino with grilled swordfish. Enjoy."

Silky and broad, offering sappy nectarine and pear skin flavors that gain depth in the mid-palate. Delivers a suave blend of richness and finesse, with juicy acidity providing lift and cut to a very long pit fruit-driven finish. Veigas de Padriñán Albariño (2013) - "The 2013 Veigas de Padriñan is a selection from very old Albariño vines on granite slopes from the Salnés Valley which fermented in stainless steel and aged in contact with the lees for 11 months in small tanks. It was finally put into 2,000 bottles in mid-September 2014. It is a serious wine with subtle aromas, in fact it feels quite closed and in need of some air, giving a sensation of crushed stones intermixed with white flowers. The palate has sharp flavors, with hints of sweet red fruit (red currants) but it's very dry, straight, mineral with balanced acidity. Great effort for 2013. Adega dos Eidos is a family winery that started producing their Rías Baixas wines in 2001. They work in the Sanxenxo zone, very close to the sea, five hectares that allow them to produce around 45,000 bottles per year. Albariños full of character."

Contraaparede (2010) - "The top cuvée is really impressive, and they are releasing the 2010 vintage now. The wine is called Contra a Parede, literally 'against the wall', a selection of their oldest vines from the Salnés Valley matured for 48 months in vat in contact with the lees. The nose shows ripe yellow fruit and mineral notes, quite fresh for its age. The palate is medium-bodied, supple and tasty with a dry and long finish. It's ready, but with good balance to keep it for a few years. 4,000 bottles. Adega dos Eidos is a family winery that started producing their Rías Baixas wines in 2001. Contraaparede (2008) - "The 2008 Contraaparede constitutes the first vineyard selection of the best fruit and sees a minimum of 44 months in tank. It has a powerful bouquet of hazelnut, nectarine, orange blossom and lanolin that soars from the glass. The palate is well-balanced and blessed with a crisp, very poised entry. There is an undercurrent of tropical fruit (passion fruit and papaya), but there is a more interesting carapace of walnuts and smoke. It is beautifully balanced, a cerebrally captivating Albariño that is worth seeking out. Drink now-2020."

Veigas de Padriñán Albariño (2011) - "The 2011 Veigas de Padriñán is similar to the Eidos but sees at least 11 months in tank. It offers a fresh lychee and grapefruit scented bouquet that is full of energy and vigor. The palate is lively with crisp cooking apple, pear-skin and nectarine on the entry and the racy acidity keeps everything straight and linear, the finish almost terse and Zen-like. This is excellent! Drink now-2018. "
